Pronounced Jer-ber-a and originally from the Transvaal and Cape Province in South Africa they were named after a German doctor Traugott Gerber.
They were first imported into Europe in the 19th century and there are over 200 varieties including the mini gerbera or 'germini'. They are available all year round and come in a fantastic array of vibrant and pastel colours.
